A national resource to improve communications between researchers and participants in clinical trials is now live.
The Beyond the Form Toolkit has been developed by CT:IQ and the VCCC Alliance in a project spanning three years.
The project was inspired by a conversation between CT:IQ Director and Bellberry’s Ethics Specialist, Dr Lisa Eckstein and a former research participant who expressed frustration about the lack of communication experienced during a clinical trial.
Dr Eckstein said development of the Toolkit is an Australian first that will have a positive impact on the clinical trials landscape.
“During a trial many participants experience very little communication. Clear two-way communication is vital for conducting clinical research effectively and efficiently,” said Dr Eckstein.
“We know that good communications results in improved engagement and better ethical and efficiency outcomes,” she said.
A project team made up of consumers, researchers, and HREC members has developed the toolkit including Australian case studies of good communication, consumer experiences and ways to develop an effective communication plan.
“We have included guidance for developing, submitting and the review of communication plans for clinical trials,” said Dr Eckstein.
“We believe that if researchers use this toolkit, it will pave the way to improved participation and engagement in clinical trials across Australia,” said Dr Eckstein.
