VCCC Alliance Chief Executive and oncologist Prof Grant McArthur AO has welcomed the Victorian Government’s $41.2 million initiative to support the next generation of cancer researchers.
Announced on Tuesday, the Cancer Research Fellowships Victoria (CFRV) initiative in collaboration with Cancer Council Victoria is a new four-year cancer research fellowship program, available for up to 24 early career cancer researchers and 40 mid-career postdoctoral researchers.
Prof McArthur applauded the move, saying it was good news for Victorian cancer patients by providing crucial investment in early to mid-career researchers.
“Cancer remains the leading cause of death in Victoria and Australia, accounting for one in every three deaths,” Prof McArthur said. “It is predicted that by 2032, more than 50,000 new cancer diagnoses will be made annually in Victoria.
“While cancer remains the leading cause of death, more people with cancer are also surviving longer. Investment in cancer research, and up and coming researchers, is therefore absolutely vital to save lives, and to improve the quality of life of those living with and beyond cancer.
“The VCCC Alliance applauds the Victorian Government’s investment in these fellowships, which is one part of the government’s Victorian Cancer Plan 2024–2028.
“Continued financial support from the Victorian Government is required to deliver the full Victorian Cancer Plan.
“To ensure the state continues to be a global leader in fighting cancer, the VCCC Alliance looks forward to working closely with the Victorian Government to implement the goals of the Victorian Cancer Plan 2024-2028.
“The next big breakthrough in the battle against cancer could be right here in Victoria,” Prof McArthur said.
