Dr Jazmin Eckhaus is an Australian-trained cardiothoracic surgeon and obtained her FRACS in 2020. She has been working as a consultant thoracic surgeon since 2021 and have completed subspecialty thoracic fellowships at Peter MacCallum Cancer Centre and the Waikato Hospital (Aotearoa New Zealand). During her fellowship she concentrated on technical and non-technical skills, as her goal has always been to be a true surgical oncologist.
Committed to improving patient outcomes, Dr Eckhaus has written the ethics application for what became the Australian and Aotearoa New Zealand Thoracic Surgical Clinical Quality Registry, which aims to improve the quality and delivery of thoracic surgery in Australia and Aotearoa. She also became a founding member of the executive committee and the data custodian.
Enthusiastic about research and education, Dr Eckhaus has supervised medical student and junior staff research projects and is always keen to encourage this interest in others. Her own research is currently focused on the prognostic assessment of patients with malignant pleural effusion. She co-ordinates and presents a medical student lecture series on thoracic surgery and thoracic oncology.
Early in her career, Dr Eckhaus has been invited to both speak at and convene components of international conferences. She is the lead for the surgical stream of the Australian mesothelioma guidelines and will be the scientific conveyer for the 2026 Royal College of Surgeons Annual Scientific meeting. She also has an active interest in surgical ethics and have a Master of Practical Ethics (University of Oxford).
